IT Manager at The Royal Society of Edinburgh

Take a look at the role…

Thank you for your interest in becoming our new IT Manager.

The RSE (Royal Society of Edinburgh), Scotland’s National Academy has a long history dating back to 1783 as a resource of some of the greatest thinkers and practitioners in Scotland who use their knowledge and expertise to support Scotland’s economic and social wellbeing, particularly in this time of nationwide recovery post-Covid-19.

As the RSE’s IT Manager, you will be at the heart of the organisation’s business, bringing specific, critical and specialist skills to support the organisation’s evolution towards being digitally stronger and better connected.

Our aim is to harness the diversity of knowledge and expertise within our Fellowship and to deploy it for the benefit of Scotland and the wider world – in the words of our mission statement, ‘knowledge made useful’.

We deliver on that mission in a number of ways: inspiring and supporting talent through a wide-ranging programme of research grants and awards; engaging the public across Scotland on key contemporary issues through our outreach programme and a diverse range of public events; providing impartial advice and expertise to inform policy and practice through in-depth examination of major issues and expert comment and input; and promoting Scotland’s interests overseas through building relationships with our sister academies and facilitating research collaborations.

We believe that the RSE occupies an important and unique space in delivering benefit to Scotland, but we are ambitious to do more and are on a journey of change to enhance our impact and reach. Pivotal to delivering our ambitions is an IT and information service that underpins our work, both now and in the future. Not only will you be supporting the development of our recently implemented CRM system, but you will lead the RSE’s IT strategy to ensure an IT system that supports the ever-changing shifts in working and cultural practices, addresses IT security threats and explores and takes advantage of constant changes in data technologies. You would be joining the RSE at a hugely exciting time as we embark on the development of our new strategic framework.

We are looking for an accomplished IT professional with a collaborative, innovative approach, a high level of drive and commitment, excellent interpersonal skills, a great track record of delivering and maintaining IT services in other organisations, and experience of successfully managing and improving upon a wide range of systems and processes. If this sounds like you, please do get in touch.

Morag MacDonald, Director of Finance & Corporate Services

The Royal Society of Edinburgh (RSE) is Scotland’s National Academy and its mission, as set out in its Royal Charter of 1783, is “the advancement of learning and useful knowledge”.

It is a charitable independent body which, through its 1600+ Fellows based in Scotland, elsewhere in the UK and globally, and with the support of a staff group currently numbering 48, delivers an extensive programme of public benefit activities which:

  • Inspire and support Scotland’s most promising young talent across the research, business and public sectors, in order to create value for the economy and society
  • Engage the public on key contemporary issues by providing an impartial forum for public debate and discussion
  • Provide expertise to ensure that Scotland’s policy makers and influencers have access to the best national, and indeed global, expertise
  • Promote Scotland’s interests and reputation on the global stage

Through our activities we aim to:

  • Enhance research capacity and leadership in Scotland and the ability to realise benefits from the research base
  • Inform and influence public policy
  • Enhance the public’s contribution to and engagement with contemporary national and global scientific, cultural and economic issues
  • Raise Scotland’s profile and strengthen its connections with the world

The RSE is one of many public, private and third sector bodies that contribute to Scotland’s economic, cultural and social wellbeing. RSE Fellows and staff work alongside and in partnership with many other individuals and organisations which share RSE’s aims and values.

Income / Funding

The work of the RSE is funded from a number of sources including Scottish Government, other public sector bodies, rental and investment income, RSE’s fellows and fundraising activities.

Governance

RSE operates on a wholly independent and non-party-political basis and provides public benefit throughout Scotland. It is overseen by a board of trustees (the Council) chaired by RSE President, Dame Professor Anne Glover and comprising members from across academia, business and public service. The Council is supported by a number of committees governing the election of new fellows and advising on key elements of RSE activity. This includes an International Committee, Public Engagement Committee, Education Committee and Economy and Enterprise Committee.

Reporting to the Director of Finance & Corporate Services – but liaising with a variety of senior staff, the IT Manager will be at the heart of the organisation’s business, bringing specific, critical and specialist skills to support the organisation’s evolution towards being digitally stronger and better connected. This role demands a progressive, forward-thinking individual who is capable of driving IT change within the organisation and working to create a robust and lasting IT offering – capable of servicing the needs and demands of stakeholders within the RSE.
